TJ's Technology Programs Expand Educational Horizons

Video: See TJ students and faculty talk about how the Tablet PCs, wireless projectors in each classroom, and videoconferencing equipment are improving the ways students learn, and helping them find joy in learning. Click here to view the video.

TJ’s Mission, in part, is to realize the potential in each student. The Tablet PC Program brings computers into the classroom and enhances your children’s learning experience and facilitates the development of skills vital to their success in the future. Technology is an integral part of our lives, and competency with technology is a critical skill that we need to teach our students at all grade levels. TJ’s commitment to leading edge technology ensures this will happen. The Tablet PC Program is the only one of its kind in the area. TJ’s program integrates technology into the learning environment — it is a means to learning, and not an end to itself. The TJ model approaches technology in the classroom as learning with technology.

The technology initiative is designed to:

  1. Enhance learning opportunities for students, including better preparation for college and careers
  2. Improve communications with parents
  3. Bring all members of the TJ community closer
  4. Maintain TJ's leadership in the delivery of educational services.

TJ's Tablet PC Program: The Specifics

Upper School students (grades 9-12) are each issued a top-of-the-line Tablet PC to use while they are enrolled at TJ.  They keep the computers until they leave TJ, and have the opportunity to purchase the computers at fair market value when they graduate.

Middle School students use Tablet PCs in some of their classes each day.  Daily usage and enhanced computer offerings ensure that they will be well prepared for Upper School (when they will have full-time use of their own Tablet PC).

Lower School classes regularly use the Tablet PCs from the computer lab in their academic exercises.  Fifth Graders have increased opportunities to use the Tablet PCs as they prepare for Middle School.

Student security and appropriate use of the technology are both important considerations, and TJ is committed to educating students to become responsible, knowledgeable and discriminating users.  Students may load software this is not inappropriate or illegal on their computers.  Certain programs such as instant messenger are blocked while students are on campus. Any student may also elect to purchase a Gateway Tablet at the same discounted price paid by TJ, but there is absolutely no requirement to do so.
