Honors Day 2012 Part 1 of 3

Thomas Jefferson celebrated Honors Day 2012 on April 26, 2012. Honors Day is a ceremony where students in 5th – 12th grade are recognized for academic excellence. Honors are awarded for students who achieve a 95% average in any core class during the first three quarters of the year, and students who maintain a “Straight A” average for the first three quarters in all of their classes. Winners of the Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, highest GPA competition, foreign lanuage exams, and other events are also recognized. The Middle and Upper School classes with the highest overal GPA are also awarded the Head of School GPA cup. The Head of School award recognizes one Middle School and one Upper School student who has performed exceptionally well.

TJ Senior named 2012 Red Cross Everyday Hero

Joplin’s Hometown News, KSN, featured a TJ student during its 6 p.m. newscast on April 5, 2012. TJ Senior Rebecca Humphreys was recognized by the Red Cross as one of seven “Everyday Heroes” for her work developing the non profit organization A Tree Grows in Joplin. Her idea to replace trees damaged by the May 22 tornado blossomed into a project that saw sponsors and volunteers purchase and plant more than 4,000 new trees in the area. Upper School students at TJ gather every Wednesday during 5th period to learn about different career and life paths from members of the community. On February 22, 2012, TJ graduate Avery Barnett (Class of 2001) talked with the students. After his graduation from TJ, he attended and graduated from West Point, and then returned to Joplin to work at a large manufacturing corporation. He talked about how transferring to TJ in 7th grade from Carthage helped prepare him academically for college. Scoring a 5 on his AP Calculus exam, for example, allowed him to skip a first-year calculus course at West Point. He also discussed his post-West Point service as an Army officer in Iraq.

TJ Senior discusses PSAT and National Merit Opportunities with TJ Upper School Students

Congratulations to Alex Oserowsky for being recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for his performance on the PSAT last fall. Alex scored in the top 5% of approximately 1.5 million juniors from over 22,000 high schools to be named a National Merit Commended Student. Being named as a National Merit Scholar gives students the opportunity to be eligible for over $34 million worth of merit-based college scholarships. Alex and Jake Hockman continue TJ’s long-standing tradition of producing the highest percentage of National Merit Scholars in the area.

The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities. The Lion and the Mouse — 2011 Lower School Musical

Lower School students in TJ’s Summer Discovery Academy performed The Lion and the Mouse on July 29. The two-week course, the Lower School Performing Arts Academy, was part of TJ’s summer program that featured courses for students of all ages. Other courses included PSAT/ACT/SAT prep for Upper School students, Middle School study skills, visual arts, and language immersion academies. More than 100 students attended courses during this year’s Summer Discovery Academy. Part 1 of 3 of the celebration — Thomas Jefferson celebrated Honors Day 2011 on April 28, 2011. Honors Day is a ceremony where students in 5th – 12th grade are recognized for academic excellence. Honors are awarded for students who achieve a 95% average in any core class during the first three quarters of the year, and students who maintain a “Straight A” average for the first three quarters in all of their classes. Winners of the Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, highest GPA competition, foreign lanuage exams, and other events are also recognized. The Middle and Upper School classes with the highest overal GPA are also awarded the Head of School GPA cup. The Head of School award recognizes one Middle School and one Upper School student who has performed exceptionally well. This year’s highest GPA class in Middle School was the Class of 2015 (8th grade). The class with the highest GPA in Upper School was the Class of 2012 (11th grade).
