We are celebrating 25 years of excellence at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School

25th Anniversary Celebration on April 11,12, and 13, 2018.

See remarks by the Chair of TJ's Board of Trustees and one of the school's visionary founders, at our 25th Anniversary Celebration alumni and alumni parent party on April 12. Mrs. Debra Humphreys discussed the school's founding, history, mission, and its impact on the community:

Mrs. Debra Humphreys made remarks at an evening event in which she spoke about the school's founding, history, mission, and its impact on the community before introducing Dr. Niall Ferguson:

We welcomed Dr. Niall Ferguson, world-renowned historian, college professor, award-winning filmmaker, and bestselling author, and he discussed the importance of independent schools, a classical liberal arts education, and the study of Western civilization:

In the fall, we kicked off our Annual Giving Campaign with a celebration of the hundreds of graduates who have matriculated to colleges and universities since the first graduating class in 1997. On December 21, we inducted our inaugural class of the Cavalier Hall of Fame, recognizing greatness in athletics for the first quarter century of the school's life.  Our alumni holiday reception welcomed dozens more graduates back to the campus.  On January 10, we celebrated again with the arrival of the Remnant Trust collection, and the event included a presentation by Remnant Trust President Kris Bex, TJ's Interim Head of School Patrick McInerney, and Founder and Chair of TJ's Board of Trustees, Debra Humphreys.

Guests were treated to a special musical performance featuring a newly commissioned song..   Jan. 10, 2018 -- The TJ Upper School Orchestra and Choir perform the World Premiere of a new song commissioned especially for TJ's 25th Anniversary Celebration.   Jan. 10, 2018 -- TJ welcomes the arrival of the Remnant Trust Collection..

The Remnant Trust is a collection of hundreds of original and first-edition documents that have shaped the ideals of human liberty, with some pieces dating as early as 2500 B.C.  Examples of documents that are available for TJ students and their teachers to use this semester include 1st edition and original draft versions of works by Isaac Newton, Voltaire, John Locke, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Walt Whitman, Nicolai Copernicus, and many others.  Mr. Bex delivered selections from The Remnant Trust collection to TJ as part of our 25th Anniversary Celebration, and we plan a 3-month exhibit of these documents at TJ.

The Remnant Trust collection is being used by TJ teachers  and students at all grade levels and across multiple disciplines.  The exhibit is not open to the public on a walk-in basis, however, we are able to schedule a limited number of appointments for faculty and students from other schools, and for other groups that would like to experience these historical documents in person. To schedule a visit, contact Robert Carlson at
