Recognizing Excellence in Athletics

Established in 2017, the Cavalier Hall of Fame recognizes Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School alumni student-athletes, teams, and coaches for outstanding athletic performance, exceptional sportsmanship, and remarkable character while representing TJ. Through their athletic accomplishments, inductees have made significant and lasting impressions, inspiring TJ student-athletes, teams, and coaches to strive for greatness.

Inaugural Class

The inaugural class of the Cavalier Hal of Fame was inducted on Dec. 21, 2017. These first inductees created the momentum in the early years of TJ’s athletic programs, earning TJ’s first significant recognition at the conference, district, regional, and state levels. See tab below to learn more.

To nominate a student-athlete, coach, or team for excellence in athletic performance, character, and sportsmanship, complete the nomination form. Inductees must have graduated or retired from TJ five or more years ago.

Inaugural Class: 2017

The inaugural class of the Cavalier Hall of Fame was inducted on Dec. 21, 2017. These inductees created the momentum in TJ’s early years to grow our athletic programs, earning some of the school’s first significant recognition on the conference, district, regional, and state athletic stages.

Class of 2023

Coach Cleo Elbert
Cleo Elbert coached at Thomas Jefferson from 2001-2017, coaching Upper School Track, Upper School Boys Basketball, and Middle School Boys Basketball. During his time as Upper School Boys Basketball Coach, his teams won two conference championships, four district championships, and made three trips to the State Quarterfinals. He also won his 500th career game on February 7th of 2006, and finished his TJ career with a record of 177-111. As Upper School Track Coach, he added two additional conference championships, while also coaching several state-level athletes.

Joe Scott
Joe was a three-sport athlete while attending Thomas Jefferson, competing in Soccer, Basketball and Tennis. In soccer, he was a four-year letter winner and was twice selected to All-District Soccer teams. In basketball, he was a three-year letter winner, earning Academic All-State his senior year. In tennis, he once again was a four-year letter winner. However, tennis is where Joe found his success as a state-level player. His sophomore year he and doubles partner, John Burnett, advanced to the state tournament, then again, his senior year, Joe and partner, Levi Vasquez, won the district tournament and their sectional round, before advancing to the medal rounds of the state tournament, eventually medaling in 8th place and earning All-State honors.

Levi Vasquez
Levi was a three-sport athlete while attending Thomas Jefferson, competing in Soccer, Basketball, and Tennis. In soccer, he was a four-year letter winner earning All-District recognition his junior year. In basketball, he was a two-time letter winner. In tennis, he was once again a four-year letter winner. Levi earned All-State honors when he and his doubles partner, Joe Scott, won the district tournament and their sectional round, before advancing to the medal rounds of the state tournament eventually medaling in 8th place.

1999 Girls Basketball
The 1999 girls basketball team finished the year with a 24-7 record and was a State Quarterfinals team after winning district and sectional championships. The quarterfinal appearance still to this day marks the farthest a TJ girls basketball team has advanced in the state playoffs.

2002 Boys Basketball
This team holds the honor of being the first boys basketball team in TJ’s history to win a district championship. The team finished the season with a 17-12 record, and advanced all the way through the state regionals.

2004 Boys Tennis
The 2004 Cavalier boys tennis team was the first TJ tennis team to win a district title. This team finished the year with a 16-3 record and finished 2nd in the State Tournament.

2005 Boys Tennis
The 2005 Tennis Cavaliers picked right up where the 2004 team left off. The team went 18-2, winning District and Sectional Championships before finishing 2nd in the state for a second straight year.

2006 Boys Tennis
The 2006 Cavalier tennis team finished as district and sectional champions, going on to finish 3rd in the State Tournament.

2009 Boys Basketball
The 2009 Cavaliers finished the year 20-8. The 20 wins marked the first time a TJ boys team had reached the 20 win plateau. The team also won the district tournament and the sectional round of the state playoffs.

2009 Boys Tennis
The 2009 Tennis Cavaliers finished the year 15-4. The team won the district tournament, the regional round, and the sectional round. The team was one win short of another trip to the final four in the state tournament.

2010 Boys Basketball
The 2010 boys basketball team finished the year 25-2, won conference for only the 2nd time in school history, won the district championship, and the sectional round game. The team also had the school’s highest final state ranking, finishing the year ranked 2nd in state by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.

2010 Boys Tennis
This team finished the year with a 15-2 record, winning districts, regionals, and their sectional round, before falling to the eventual State Champions in the State Quarterfinals.

2015 Boys Tennis
The 2015 Cavalier tennis team finished the year 13-2, winning the district championship, and eventually advancing all the way to the State Quarterfinals.
