Global security expert and New York Times Bestselling author
Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president for intelligence, is one of the world's foremost experts on security, terrorists and terrorist organizations. He is also an author, and his most recent book, Under Fire: The Untold Story of the Attack in Benghazi, is a New York Times bestseller. He visited TJ on March 21, 2016, for an evening lecture (open to the community), and talked with students during the school day on March 22.
Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- New York Times Bestselling author Jonathan Haidt
About the Series:
What on earth is happening to our country? Why is it often difficult for Americans to understand each other across lines of partisanship, religion, and race? Haidt’s talk, Why Good People are Divided by Politics, Religion, Race, and Sports, will take up these questions and offer us ways to avoid arguments, strengthen relationships, and learn from people we would otherwise avoid. (Sports is in the title to show that the psychology of tribalism is often quite enjoyable.)
The event was free and open to students, parents, grandparents, graduates, alumni parents, and friends of the school.
The TJ community gathered to celebrate the career of
Mr. Steven McCollum on Saturday, May 17, 2014, in the TJ Concert Hall. More than 225 students, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, graduates, and friends of the school celebrated in the concert hall and at a reception in the Hershewe Family Courtyard.

The Steven McCollum Distinguished Speakers Series at Thomas Jefferson Announced
During the celebration of Mr. McCollum's career on May 17, Debra Humphreys, Chairman of TJ's Board of Trustees, announced the creation of the Steven McCollum Distinguished Speakers Series. The Steven McCollum Distinguished Speakers Series at Thomas Jefferson will provide topical insight and historical perspective on current events in the U.S. and around the world. Through the series, TJ students - and the entire TJ community - will have the opportunity to learn from, and interact with, prominent leaders in academic, public policy, and government institutions.
TJ alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and TJ parents and friends will have the opportunity to honor Mr. McCollum with their support of the Steven McCollum Distinguished Speaker Series. We are fortunate to have in hand startup funding of $105,000 in lead gifts from several Board members, as well as two challenge gifts by the Hershewe and Humphreys families to match dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 on all additional contributions.
That means every TJ parent, alumni parent, graduate, or friend of the school who makes a tax-deductible contribution will have that contribution matched (up to a total of $50,000). A $250 contribution from you, for example, means $500 will go toward this meaningful program. Watch for more details about this exciting program in the months to come. Portrait of Mr. McCollum unveiled at Celebration
The TJ Board of Trustees commissioned a portrait of Steven McCollum by local portrait artist Robyn Cook. The portrait was unveiled at the celebration, and will be hung in the hallway outside Mr. McCollum's classroom door. It is a striking likeness of Mr. McCollum teaching, and is on display until June 1 in the Gallery and Arts Lobby at TJ.
